Battlefield Active Interrogation Friendly Force Identification System (BAIFFIS)
Fratricide situations, more commonly known as “Friendly Fire” incidents, have been regarded as an inevitable Force Majeure for generations.
Identification has always been a major concern during wartime, but current battlefield conditions, notably in urban warfare and counterterrorism operations, along with the tactics and conduct of terrorists, make effective identification of hostile and friendly forces even more difficult than ever before.
In the absence of doctrinal solutions to the problem of battlefield identification, a technological solution is required. Such a solution should enable prompt, positive identification of friendly forces under the conditions that prevail in combat situations. It should be available to all combat elements and platforms in the air and on the ground. A technological solution ensuring positive identification of as many friendly elements as possible will significantly improve situational awareness and battlefield effectiveness while minimizing “Friendly Fire” incidents.
ACS presents BAIFFIS – Battlefield Active Interrogation Friendly Force Identification System.
BAIFFIS is a compact, efficient battlefield identification system. Basically, the system consists of two elements: an active interrogator and a transponder.
The BAIFFIS interrogator may be fitted to various platforms such as tactical vehicles and helicopters, or integrated in various equipment items such as binoculars and night vision systems. It transmits an encoded Laser signal that triggers a response (in the form of an encoded UHF signal) from friendly transponders.
The BAIFFIS transponder is a lightweight, wearable universal unit that may be fitted to a trooper’s helmet or worn on his arm. Weighing only 140 grams and powered by standard batteries, it responds autonomously to the interrogation signal from the BAIFFIS interrogator with no user intervention.
The communication link between the BAIFFIS interrogator and transponder will be established under LOS (Line of Sight) or NLOS (Non Line of Sight) conditions. The system effectively identifies friendly forces inside buildings, in narrow streets or alleys and behind cover.
BAIFFIS offers a safe, highly reliable, autonomous and compact LIFE-SAVING solution to the problem of battlefield identification.
